The Downsizing (Erm… Restructuring)

Friday, October 20th, 2006

The following positions have been made redundant:

  • G5 and 2 CRT monitors. Replaced with MacBook.
  • DVD player and TV. Replaced with MacBook.
  • Dozens of CDs. Ripped to MP3.
  • 2 crates of records (3 more to follow). Ripped to MP3.
  • 1 set of speakers. Replaced with headphones.
  • 1 synth module and 1 drum-machine/sequencer. Replaced with software.
  • 2 old PCs. No longer used.

Shares in Lucas Chan Trading Co. rose slightly as a result of the restructuring, but took a sharp dive just before the close of trading.

Downsize your life. It feels good.

Subtitles

Karl came up with this bit of genius at Black Cat last night.

Movies with subtitles need emoticons.

That is all. :teef:

Embarrassment

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

So anyway. We were all presented with a little show bag after arriving at the island. Each contained a pair of oversized sunglasses, a hawaiian themed shirt and a personalised gift.

My personalised gift? A jumbo pack of prophylactics.

It was funny at the time. I guess you had to be there.

Upon checking in for the return flight the girl at the desk asked to weigh my hand luggage. It was 1 kilo too heavy. I unzipped my bag and we both peered inside to see what I might remove.

There it was in all it’s unopened glory. These things shine brightly on supermarket shelves. Even more so atop a small collection of dirty clothing and camera gear at an airport check-in desk.

The look on her face conveyed a humorous blend of “You idiot” and “Hope you get lucky next time”.

*sigh*

The Wikipedia Defense

Monday, October 9th, 2006

I’ve never really heard of this happening before. Floyd Landis has declared that he will post three hundred odd pages of French legal documents on his web site so that his supporters may help discover things that will be helpful in his defense.

We call it the Wikipedia defense

I wonder if we’ll see more of this in the future? People using their high profiles to enlist a small army of legal assistants, litigation 2.0?

The prize for the most underwhelming piece of journalism on this topic goes to Jon Saraceno from USA TODAY.

It’s not a stretch to think that a dude who listens to Metallica, one who can’t remember how many shots of Jack Daniel’s he slugged back the night before rallying to win, would grab a needle or apply a testicular patch in a moment of desperation.

Results of his “A” specimen added to the “B” sample — with Landis’ vigorous but hollow-sounding defense — add up to “C.” As in Cheater.

So cheesy.

Google and YouTube :: Probably Not

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

There’s lots of banter going around today about Google acquiring YouTube. Jason Calcanis reckons it makes perfect sense, I’m still not convinced.

Google’s search business makes so much money that they could leave the YouTube service the way it is and make back their $1.6B in 6-7 years just by putting Google search boxes all over the site.

I think the main reason that no one has sued the pants of YouTube yet is that they don’t have any money. As soon as there’s money to be made from suing them they’ll start being hit with litigation. If someone is going to buy YouTube they’re also buying into a legal time-bomb, which is going to take a lot more than 6-7 years of search/adsense revenue to recover.

So anway, let’s see what happens, I may be chowing down on humble pie yet. :)

Update: I was wrong.  So very, very wrong.  I’ll take cream with that pie, thank you.

Less Is More

Sunday, October 1st, 2006

I found a full page ad for the new SanDisk Sansa e200 MP3 player in Beat Magazine today. It was somewhat colourful and inviting, but all I was able to determine from it was that it had 20 hours of battery life. There was no mention of storage capacity, cost, supported formats, or anything else that one might consider a useful feature or accessory.

While flipping through the in-flight magazine on the way to Sydney I came across a multi-page ad for a new Nokia phone. Again, no mention of any kind of features, just a compellingly beautiful photo.

It seems that print media has finally gone the way of billboard advertising where these products are concerned. All they want to sell you is the brand and the lifestyle, the rest is not so important. Have we really reached the point where we don’t care what our mobile devices are capable of? I’m not sure I agree.
